Description:
20c Part of Proscenium and Modern Facade. Centenary of Metropolitan Opera, New York 1983.

The Metropolitan Opera’s opening night took place on October 22, 1883. Opera performances offer a demanding mixture of acting, singing, music, scenery and dance, and are usually performed in special opera houses. The Metropolitan Opera quickly became one of the most revered opera houses in the world. In 1966, the Metropolitan Opera moved to a new, modern facility that continues that proud tradition.

Interestingly, the Metropolitan Opera stamp’s design combines architectural elements of the old and new buildings. The five arches in the foreground are from the entrance of the new building. The arch in the background topped the stage of the original building.
